We’ve just added an extra short break trip for the May Bank Holiday week. Come and join our group on an Assynt walking adventure to tackle some of the iconic peaks of NW Scotland such as Cul Mor, Suilven and Quinag over a long weekend during the bank holiday week from Fri 8th to Sun 10th May, using a base in the lovely west coast fishing village of Ullapool. Each day we’ll head out for some stunning walking in this uniquely beautiful area. Our walks will range from 8-14 miles/13-23 km in length with up to 3400 ft/1150 meters of ascent. Often we’ll be able to take advantage of well constructed hill paths but on occasions there may be rough, steep, or boggy terrain.
In order to enjoy this trip it helps to be reasonably fit, and some hillwalking experience is an advantage but by no means essential.
Our proposed programme for this Assynt walking short break is as follows:
Day 1: we shall make a circuit of Cul Mor – a fine peak which stands on the edge of the Inverpolly National Nature Reserve and is a superb viewpoint for the district of Coigach (13.5km/8.25 miles, Ascent 850m)
Day 2: Quinag. This splendid route takes in the 3 tops of Quinag, an isolated massif that stands above Kylesku and the wild inlet of Loch Glencoul. each of the 3 summits has a completly different character and ever changing views. The walking is never too daunting but there are some wonderful narrow sections of superlative ridge walking. (14km/8.75 miles, Ascent 1130m)
Day 3: Suilven: The Vikings called this “Pillar Mountain” and the name is apt. This dramatic sugar loaf in the heart of wild Assynt towers above the village of Lochinver, and hidden from that view is a fine narrow crest. We approach the mountain by way of a legthy but well-made track which leads to a bothy at Suileag. from there we cross the base of the mountain before ascending a short but steep gully to the wonderful crest. From the stone seat on the summit the views are astonishing!
We will base ourselves for this Assynt walking short break in Ullapool, a charming fishing village easily accessible by public transport from Inverness, with a selection of great pubs and places to eat. You can choose from our list of recommended accommodation, with options to suit all budgets. Each evening we’ll get together for a lively meal on one of the local pubs and to discuss plans for the following day.
